Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the demographic characteristics of pediatric patients that are typically seen in the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Emergency Department for common dental emergencies. Understanding the demographic characteristics of the patient population seen will help us to provide more effective anticipatory guidance during preventive dental visits.
Methods: A retrospective chart review between July 1, 2022, and July 30, 2023, was conducted. Patients’ demographics, (age, gender, race, dental home, and insurance status) were evaluated in accordance with their specific dental trauma.
Results: A total of 219 patients were seen from July 1, 2022, and July 30, 2023, for dental-related complications. 13 (5.9%) were seen for Avulsions from Trauma. 1 (.45%) were seen for Alveolar Fractures. 27 (12.3) were seen for caries resulting in facial swelling. 35 (15.95) were seen for pain because of caries. 2(.91) were seen for complication from extractions. 22( 10%) were seen for fractures from trauma. 44 (20%) were seen for Intrusion/Subluxation/Luxation from Trauma. 52 ( 23%) were seen for NRT teeth that needed extraction. The remaining 7% were seen for miscellaneous dental issues. The average of the patients seen was 7 years old. 128 of the patients were males, 91 were females. 180 had dental insurance while 39 did not. 155 had an established dental home while 64 did not.
Conclusions: After-hours dental emergencies are predominantly related to 7-year-old males with NRT, with an established dental home and dental insurance.
