Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the preventative dental care utilization frequency in patients with autism spectrum disorders following oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia. Secondary study outcomes included comparing if children with autism were more likely to utilize these services compared to children without autism and if there was a difference in utilization frequency based on the patient’s age.
Methods: The retrospective cohort study (chart review) included 500 patients with autism having undergone oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia. These patients were matched with children without autism based on demographic information and age. Dental preventative services utilized in a 10-year period following each patient’s general anesthesia visit will then be analyzed.
Results: Children with ASD are less likely to return for preventative services following general anesthesia, however when they do return, they utilize preventative services over emergency services. 12-18 year olds are more likely to return for preventative services.
Conclusion: Barriers remain to care for children with ASD specifically in the 0-6year age group. Early family education is needed to combat this problem.
