Purpose: The purpose of this study was to perform a descriptive analysis of the trends of higher-level evidence (HLE) publications in 7 pediatric dental journals from 2003-2022 using PubMed. Methods: Pediatric dentistry journals were identified through PubMed online database using keywords “pediatric”, “paediatric”, “children”, “dentistry”, and “pedodontics”. Only pediatric dental journals currently indexed for MEDLINE were included. The journals included were: European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry, European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry Journal, Journal of Dentistry for Children (Chicago, Ill.), Journal of the Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, and International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry. For each journal, the “article type” filter was used in PubMed to include only meta analyses, randomized control trials, and systematic reviews. Results were downloaded using the “results by year” scale from 2003-2022. Excel was then used to analyze the number of HLE publications in 2-year increments. Results: Since 2003, there have been 1,131 total HLE publications in 7 leading pediatric dental journals. Of the 1,131, 44% have come since 2017. The leading journal of total HLE publications was International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry with 307.
Conclusion: Six of the 7 journals have shown a positive trend in HLE publications during the years 2003-2022. Nearly half of the total HLE publications have come within the last 6 years. This data is consistent with the trends in other medical and dental journals.
