252 - Silver and Fluoride Release from SDF Treated Carious Lesions

Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the amount of silver and fluoride ions released from natural caries lesions treated with SDF with and without light-emitting diode curing light (LED).

Methods: Eighteen extracted primary teeth with natural caries lesions were divided into 4 groups: 1) 1-min SDF application (n=6), 2) 40-sec SDF application + 20-sec LED (n=6), 3) Untreated Control (n=3), and 4) Untreated + 20-sec LED control (n=3). Samples were immersed in 10 mL of artificial saliva at 0.5 hour, 1 hour, 24 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks, and maintained in an oven at 37°C.
At each time point, the tooth was transferred to a new tube containing 10 mL of fresh artificial saliva and kept in the oven at 37°C until the subsequent time point. All collected saliva samples were individually stored in a refrigerator at 4°C. Silver and
fluoride concentrations were analyzed using ICP-MS and F-ISE, respectively. Statistical analysis was done using a two-way repeated measures ANOVA.

Results: At 0.5 hour, the silver and fluoride mean concentrations were statistically higher in group 1 compared to group 2 (P≤.05) and significantly higher than the rest of the time points (P≤.05). Subsequent time points were not statistically significant between group 1 and group 2 (P≥.05).

Conclusion: Applying an LED light after SDF application, leads to a 93% and 50% reduction in the leaching of silver and fluoride, respectively, into the surrounding medium compared to a 1-min SDF treatment alone within 0.5 hour after application.
