Dr. Safaa Ahmed is a committed researcher & clinician dedicated to advancing oral health outcomes, particularly for underserved populations. With a strong educational background in clinical investigation & health services research, she brings extensive expertise in dental public health to her work. After completing her dental education, Dr. Ahmed delved into community dentistry, contributing significantly to a statewide initiative led by the oral health directorate at the Federal Ministry of Health in Sudan. Her involvement included providing dental care to internally displaced & refugee camps, where she played a crucial role in data collection, analysis, and reporting. Additionally, she established a referral system for complex cases, ensuring access to necessary treatment.
Dr. Ahmed continued her education with master's and doctoral training at Columbia University, specializing in epidemiology, program planning and evaluation. During her doctoral program, she led the Millennium Villages initiative in Ethiopia and Senegal, where she developed and evaluated oral health programs in rural communities. She conducted the first cluster randomized trial in oral health in rural Ethiopia and translated her findings into actionable policy recommendations.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Dr. Ahmed has gained clinical experience through residencies in pediatric dentistry and dental public health from Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. She has engaged with diverse demographic groups and conducted research projects analyzing data on dental caries and social determinants of health among children and adults in the United Sates. Currently pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship in Special Care Dentistry at Texas A&M University School of Dentistry, Dr. Ahmed continues to enhance her clinical skills and engage in research aimed at improving access to oral healthcare for underserved communities and individuals with special needs. Her unwavering dedication underscores her commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing barriers to care.
