Purpose: To evaluate the structural changes produced by 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) in the hard, healthy and decayed crown tissues of primary teeth.
The average results of untreated carious enamel was 1300.37, with SDF 1589.54 (difference of +289.17), untreated carious dentine was 654.25, with SDF 1200.98 (difference of +546.73), after 2 months untreated carious enamel was 1213.69, with SDF 1674.62 (+460.99) and untreated carious dentine was 646.95, with SDF 1219.17 (difference of +572.22). The groups showing statistically significant difference (p≤.05) were: healthy dentine with SDF, carious enamel with SDF and carious dentine with SDF.
Methods: After extraction, the teeth were cleaned and stored in 0.5% chloramine. Then were divided into 4 groups (healthy enamel and dentine, caries in enamel and dentine, healthy enamel and dentine with SDF application and caries in enamel and dentine with SDF application) and their mean radiodensity values were determined in Hounsfield Units (HU) by CBCT.
Results: The average results of untreated healthy enamel was 2077.29, with SDF was 1599.73 HU (difference of -477.56) untreated healthy dentine was 1012.08, with SDF 1254.64 (difference of +242.56), after 2 months average of untreated healthy enamel was 1830.34, with SDF 2154.08 (difference of +323.74), untreated healthy dentine was 1222.29, with SDF 1595.06 HU (difference of +372.77).
Conclusions: The use of SDF increases the density of healthy dentine, carious dentine and carious enamel with treatment at 2 months of observation.
