Purpose: Hemophiliac patients are considered high risk for dental health issues. Due to their complex medical history, hemophiliac patients require a multidisciplinary approach with acute and chronic care. This study aimed to determine the potential benefit of a dental provider within a Pediatric Hemophiliac Treatment Center to promote improved oral health outcomes.
Methods: A prospective pilot study is approved on children ages 5-17 years old, attending the outpatient Pediatric Hematology Clinic at University of Florida Shands Hospital. Oral examinations were completed by pediatric dental residents. Data completed included patient’s oral hygiene index (OHI) and the presence of decayed, missing, and filled deciduous and permanent teeth. Caregivers completed questionnaire on oral health behaviors and perceptions. This information was recorded at the initial outpatient visit and again at their 6 month follow up appointment.
Results: Data collection is ongoing. Recruitment is limited due to the complexity of the patient population targeted. At present, eight children have completed the baseline component and five children have completed the six-month follow up. Concerns noted at baseline included gums bleed during brushing and moderate to frequent snacking. At the six-month time point, zero stated that their child’s gums bleed at follow up with three of five reporting moderate-to-frequent snacking.
Conclusions: Although recruitment and enrollment of patients is challenging, the clinical importance warrants identifying strategies to improve oral health management of this population.
