Purpose: To analyze the characteristics of dental emergencies during the 25th World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) and to provide guidelines for similar international events.
Methods: Data collected from emergency dental records included gender, age, nationality, date of visit, language used during consultation, chief complaint, treatment, and use of radiography. The data were separated into youth scouts and adult leaders for analysis, and the effect of patient demographics on chief complaints was examined.
Results: Eighty dental visits for 71 patients were analyzed. Adult leaders had a higher proportion of visits in the first half of the event compared to youth scouts in the second half (P < .05). The most common reasons for visits by youth scouts were orthodontic discomfort (40%) and oral ulcers (30%), whereas, for adult leaders, the most common reasons were oral ulcers (18%), restoration loss (15%), and pulpitis (12%).
Conclusions: There was a higher incidence of dental conditions associated with a hot and humid environment and dental discomfort related to adolescents. The establishment of a localized medical system centered on regional general hospitals appears to be critical to ensure prompt dental support for unexpected healthcare needs during international summer camp events.
