Purpose: The aim of this retrospective study is to assess the occurrence of caries in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Additionally, the study seeks to ascertain whether our current protocols for oral health evaluation are being effective in preventing oral health conditions and scheduling delays.
Methods: This is a retrospective chart review on patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome treated by the Heart Institute and treated at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA) dental clinic in the past 10 years (January 2013 to December 2022). We will obtain and extract data through electronic health record from the Heart Institute and dental clinic at CHLA.
Results: Pending data analysis
Conclusions: We hypothesize there is higher caries incidence in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome when compared to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) known caries rate in children. In addition, we hypothesize there are delays prior to cardiac surgery due to poor oral health in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
