Prevalence of e-cigarette use among parents and their opinion on tobacco counseling for their child provided by pediatric dentists
Authors: Shikha Dharia, DMD and Nuntiya Kakanantadilok, DMD
Purpose: The use of electronic cigarettes (EC’s) also known as e-cigs or vapes has increased, especially among younger populations. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of EC/tobacco users among parents, if parents discuss EC/tobacco use with their children, and parents’ opinion on tobacco prevention counseling from a pediatric dentist.
Methods: Parents or legal guardians of patients in the Montefiore Pediatric Dental clinics will be given a survey when they bring their child in for their dental appointments. Data collection will occur over a period of three months.
Results: Once data collection is complete, descriptive statistical analysis will be performed.
Conclusion: The results of this study will help determine if parents who are EC users are more likely to discuss EC use with their children and more likely to want their pediatric dentist to discuss tobacco cessation/use with their children compared to non-users.
