Title: Relationship between early Childhood Caries and adult substance use disorder.
Background/Purpose: Widely published substance use is linked to dental neglect, and she identified maternal substance use as an important factor in advanced childhood caries. Furthermore, parental oral health behavior is a known predictor of offspring's caries experience in childhood and that it is difficult to establish preventive dental care for children if the parents functioning is low. The aim of this study is to determine if use disorder is a predictor of Early Childhood Caries in pediatric populations.
Methods: Data was obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from the 2011-2012 survey to the most recent survey (total 7 cycles). The NHANES oral health survey and substance abuse surveys were utilized. Parents with and without substance use disorder were analyzed to compare offspring oral health status. Data was analyzed controlling for parental substance use disorder and indicators of children’s oral health. Descriptive statistics and chi square performed to determine significant differences between subjects.
Results/Conclusion: Data still being collected, results pending.
