286 - MID utilization in OR patients pre and post COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:

Purpose:  This retrospective chart review was conducted to understand the differences in extent of minimally invasive dentistry (MID) treatment received by patients prior to dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. MID has been used as an alternative to traditional restorative treatment in patients with limited cooperation and when operative room availability is scarce.

 

Methods/

Design:  Patient charts from the years 2018 to 2022 were reviewed to determine the percentage of patients (and teeth) who received MID including silver diamine fluoride or interim therapeutic restorations prior to dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia. Demographics of patients who received MID were also collected. Statistical analysis was completed and a P-value of < .05 was used.

 



Results:  In 2022, 68% of operating room patients received MID, an increase from 48% in 2018. In 2022, the average OR patient who received MID had an average of 4.3 teeth treated with SDF and 4.5 teeth treated with interim therapeutic restorations  an increase from 3.5 teeth treated with SDF and 3.2 teeth treated with interim therapeutic restorations in 2018. 

 



Conclusion:  MID is an important tool in managing patients with limited cooperation and when operating room availability is limited. MID may provide dentists with a tool to delay the need for dental rehabilitation or eliminate the need entirely.
