ABSTRACT
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to conduct an umbrella review to determine the accuracy of the pediatric sleep questionnaire (PSQ) as a screening tool for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (POSA).
Methods: The methods adhered to the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) check list. Studies that included the PSQ as a screening tool and polysomnography as a diagnostic tool for POSA were included. The subjects included in the study were children younger than 18 years of age. Data extraction was completed by two independent reviewers and the methodological quality was assessed with the AMSTAR 2 tool and meta-analysis of primary data.
Results: Five articles were included in the final review. The average sensitivity and specificity of the PSQ were 74.96 and 49.67, respectively. The included studies showed a high positive likelihood ratio. The diagnostic odds ratio was 6.94 for this umbrella review.
Conclusions: The results of this umbrella suggest that dentists who treat children should regularly screen for POSA, which the PSQ is demonstrated to sufficiently fulfill the guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
