Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and acceptance of a video informing caregivers of pediatric dental patients of the harmful effects of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs). We hypothesized after watching the video, guardians will be more likely to decrease their consumption and share the information with others.
Methods: Caregivers of pediatric patients aged 0-12 years with a BMI > 85% and/or have dental caries at a community health center in San Diego, CA were selected to watch a 4-minute video and complete a survey regarding their child's daily SSB and 100% juice consumption. After watching the 4-minute video, caregivers answered questions regarding their impression of the video and the likelihood of decreasing consumption habits.
Results: Seventy-six surveys were collected. A majority were mothers [56 (73.7 %)] and the average patient age was 7.87 years. Most caregivers found the video useful, were willing to share it with others, and found the length of the video to be appropriate.
Conclusion: Utilizing an informative video in a dental setting can be helpful in sharing important information about the harmful effects of SSBs.
