Purpose: In the United States, children who have negative experiences at school are more likely to have health concerns. The aim of this study is to take a deeper dive into the adverse events and stressors taking place inside the school that predispose children to poor oral health and caries.
Methods: Parent reported data from the 2021 National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) was analyzed to assess the association between children in Massachusetts and the US ages 6-11 having oral health problems (e.g., toothaches, bleeding gums, and/or decayed teeth or cavities) and having school related adverse events and stressors (e.g., missed days at school, repeated a grade, has been a bully, has been bullied, has difficulty making friends, and has multiple school calls home with a problem). Association was calculated using descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis.
Results/
Conclusion: The expected sample size is 13584 nationally, and 218 for the state of Massachusetts. Data analysis is ongoing.
