Empirically supported guidelines for treatment of Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) are lacking. This case examines various dental modalities and factors that should be considered for patients with AI.
A 12-year-old male with AI was seen for a recall exam. Pictures, radiographs, medical and dental histories were evaluated. Treatment options of composite, amalgam, ceramic and metal crown restorations were presented. After discussing risks, benefits, and alternatives, the mother and patient agreed to a minimally invasive amalgam restoration.
A conservative amalgam restoration with sealant was completed on the mesial-occlusal surfaces of tooth #13. The patient was sent home with a mouthguard and prevident toothpaste prescription to wear at night and during physical contact activities. He is on a three month recall for caries prevention.
Ultimately, treatment considerations for teeth subject to AI varies. While there are no definitive guidelines, frequent recall examinations and timely care are important factors for patients with AI.
