Abstract: This study investigates the role of primary care providers, specifically pediatricians, in facilitating timely dental visits for children under 72 months in Brooklyn, New York. Despite the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's recommendation for a dental home by 12 months, children often present for their first dental visit due to tooth decay or pain. The research employs a cross-sectional, prospective survey design across five dental clinics, examining referral rates by primary care providers and categorizing reasons for delayed visits. By assessing factors influencing parents' decisions and understanding referral dynamics, the study aims to identify barriers to timely pediatric dental care. The outcomes will inform strategies to enhance early dental visits, improve oral health education, and address disparities in access to pediatric oral healthcare. The study spans from August 2023 to June 2024, and findings will be disseminated to contribute valuable insights to pediatric oral health practices and policies.
